‘Spreek Nederlands dag’ on Saturday 1 July 2017 was a fantastic experience! The participants were really excited and the atmosphere in Central Library The Hague was great. Some people were a bit nervous at first, but the nerves vanished during the speed masterclass Dutch by Petra Hisgen. The workshop refreshed our Dutch and gave us more confident to go out and speak Dutch in public. Even to ‘stubborn’ waiters who insist on speaking English to foreigners :).
Seven groups of expats went out in the center of The Hague. To test how patient Dutch waiters are when it comes to expats who insist on ordering everything in Dutch. The groups had a lot of fun together. Some of them even returned too late. So they must have had a great time!
The winner of the restaurant check is café-restauran Luden (Plein 6-7, Den Haag) . According to our test panels, this is the best café to go to when you want to practise speaking Dutch! Waiter Nino remained patient and spoke Dutch all the way. Expats are sometimes baffled by the bluntness of Dutch waiters. Not our Nino, he was professional, attentive and very polite. And he was so cute that everybody wanted to marry him :). The sandwiches they served were also fantastic, by the way!
