Intensive beginners A0-A2

Two week intensive beginners courses

The Intensive Beginner course is meant for absolute beginners with no prior knowledge of Dutch. Within two weeks – ten weekdays – students deal with the entire elementary grammar of Dutch and build up a vocabulary of about 1000 words. Besides, they learn how to communicate effectively in Dutch in every-day situations, reaching from introducing themselves to discussing international politics and from grocery shopping to describing one’s ideal partner. This course is a great way to get familiar with the Dutch language within two weeks!

Method

Our classes are based on the direct method. This means that all classes are highly interactive and focus on communication. In every first and third class of a day, new words and structures are introduced by means of question and answer series. In the second and fourth class, the newly learned words and structures are consolidated by plenary discussing exercises from the coursebook. Dutch is spoken in class from the very first lesson ( although some points of grammar may be explained in English to save time).

Culture

At Direct Dutch, we believe that it is impossible to separate a language from its cultural context. There is an important role for Dutch culture throughout our courses. The Intensive Beginners course includes a series of 12 short lectures on aspects of Dutch society such as history, geography, politics, arts and media. In the first few weeks these talks/discussions will be in English, but later on they will be held in Dutch.

Prerequisites

This course does not require any prior knowledge of Dutch. Knowledge of English is required to attend the Beginners Course.

Do I need an intake first?
All courses that start higher than A0 have prerequisites. An intake is required if you haven’t completed a course at Direct Dutch before AND you want to take a course that doesn’t start at A0.

If you want to enrol in a course, and worry about the intake later, that’s fine. After we receive your enrolment form, we will inform you if a free oral test is required. Please also feel free to book an appointment for a free oral test prior to enrolling in a course.

For more information about course levels (the CEFR), our intakes and course prerequisites, please go the page ‘Where do I start?‘ Would you rather talk to one of us in person? Please feel free to contact our office!

Examination

At the end of the course, there will be a multiple choice test assessing your level of Dutch. Upon handing in this test, you will receive a Direct Dutch certificate, stating you have completed the Beginners A2 (CEFR) course. Please note that the certificate is only a general indicator of the proficiency level. Read more about the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) here.
